The study, conducted by Trinity University professors Richard V. Butler, Ph.D. and Mary E. Stefl, Ph.D., reveals that tourism and hospitality businesses generated a total of $16.2 billion in revenue for the San Antonio economy. That’s 93% of the 2019 pre-pandemic figures.

Marc Anderson, President and CEO of Visit San Antonio, says the economic impact report showcases the importance of tourism and hospitality in San Antonio.

“Our 2021 economic impact study attests to the impact of the leisure and hospitality industry in San Antonio. It represents the economic vitality in our community, which is steadfast,” Anderson said. “Unlike other cities, San Antonio tourism is rebounding faster than anticipated and is on track to reach pre-pandemic numbers than previously forecasted.”

Tourism and hospitality also made a significant impact on San Antonio’s workforce development. It employs more than 128,000 San Antonians, which is one in eight workers locally. Jenna Saucedo-Herrera, President and CEO of greater:SATX, serves as Chair on the Visit San Antonio Board of Directors.

“More than 70 locally owned restaurants and 10 hotels have opened their doors since the start of the pandemic. This means more jobs and economic boost for our local community,” Saucedo-Hererra said. “When business and leisure travelers visit San Antonio, they support local businesses and workers while driving economic growth.”   San Antonio is one of the nation’s top travel destinations. This is a testament to the city’s resilience through recovery. Visit San Antonio looks to maintain its top-level status with a focus on establishing the Alamo City as a leading global destination.
