ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaskans will have a direct transportation link to the Russian Far East – for at least another two months.
Vladivostok Air landed at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport Monday morning for the first weekly charter flight in a series scheduled this month and next.
Alaskans who do business in Russia say the direct flights will be a benefit.
“Without this direct route Kamchatka is a very difficult place to get to,” said business traveler Pete Soverel. “So for the past few years there has not been a direct flight and all of our business has had to either go LA to Tokyo, Seoul to Vladivostok or via Moscow, which is like a two-day travel.”
The flights will arrive in Anchorage each Monday and will continue through August.
Vladivostok Air says it’ll decide whether to continue the service next summer depending on the response.
