An email statement, sent by HTJ’s executive director Takashi Ichikura said, “We have decided to downsize our Hawaii office and are currently reviewing our operations. Therefore, we unfortunately will not have any representation in Honolulu as of the end of this month and until further notice.”

The Hawaii Tourism Authority, a state agency funded by hotel guest tax revenues, is contracted with J Compass, dba as Hawaii Tourism Japan , for marketing management services in Japan .

According to HTA’s web site, HTJ has a staff of 13 in Tokyo and Honolulu .

Japanese arrivals in Hawaii plummeted 10.5 percent to 1.16 million in 2008, as compared to 2007.

After US West and US East, Japan is Hawaii ’s third largest market.
