Democrat party deputy leader Korn Chatikavanij, who is a favourite to become the new finance minister, on Tuesday said it is likely that the Thai economy would remain negative to the first quarter of 2009 and it is imperative for the government to urgently address rising unemployment and low agricultural product prices while reviving the tourism industry and allocating more funds for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
The government run by the Democrat party is ready to support the policy to raise next year’s budget of 100 billion baht, but the budget allocation will have to be reconsidered after the new cabinet is formed, according to Mr Korn.
The government is also ready to revise and carry on the policies to promote the grass-root economy and the sky-train project, he added.
Following the news that the Democrat deputy leader could head the Ministry of Finance, World Bank officials met him to discuss the country’s economic direction.
